Blumsom are committed to protecting the environment.
Our policy is to base our commercial activities on well-managed forest resources, recycle waste and meet, or exceed, all applicable environmental legislation.

Blumsom Policies

C Blumsom Limited recognises a responsibility to its customers, suppliers and staff to base its commercial activities on well managed forest resources. Accordingly the company is also committed to achieving environmental best practice throughout its activity whenever this is practical. In pursuit of economic growth and a healthy environment it is understood that these are closely linked and that ecological protection and sustainable development are the responsibility of all, including business, governments and communities.

C Blumsom Limited’s Board of Blumsom takes responsibility for the development and endorsement of this policy statement and its implementation throughout all operations. A director has been appointed to carry out the policy, to ensure that key members of staff are trained and that all employees are advised of our position. The company maintains a policy of continuous environmental improvement. Environmental performance is monitored for achievement of our objectives and an annual report will be made available on request.

C Blumsom Ltd. is committed to buying all hardwood and softwood from legal and renewable sources, and will seek evidence that suppliers are in compliance with this policy. As sources of certified timber become more available the company will give preference to certified timber wherever practical and will not purchase timber where it is known to have originated from illegal sources and will not purchase any timber species prohibited under Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trading on Endangered Species (CITES). C Blumsom Ltd will make every attempt to avoid making misleading claims with regard to timber sources and expects suppliers to maintain high environmental standards in respect of goods and services. Suppliers are expected to cooperate with us towards the achievement of the company’s environmental goals.

At Blumsom, our aim is to reduce consumption of all materials and packaging wherever possible and we are committed to recycling packaging materials wherever this is practical.

Blumsom was one of the first companies in the UK to install an automatic wood waste boiler to make use of recycled wood and sawdust. Our state-of-the-art boiler is now used to heat our factory and to power all our kilns, whilst minimising emissions (which are monitored and logged).

As members of the Timber Trade Federation there is a requirement to undertake environmental due diligence and as such we are signatories to the TTF’s Responsible Purchasing Policy.

The RPP provides a rick assessment based approach to progressively source increasing proportions of timber products from legal and sustainable sources and promote good procurement policies.

There is a requirement to report annually to appointed external auditors who access and verify the company’s progress and compliance under the policy.

C Blumsom Ltd. are certified for Chain of Custody. The current certificates are valid until 2023, issued by BM TRADA is in respect of processes and products which are eligible to carry the FSC® and PEFC logos.

What is Chain of Custody?

Chain of custody is the mechanism for tracking timber through the whole supply chain, from the forest to its final use. Products certified by the FSC are classified by the UK government as both sustainable and legal – a criteria that is increasingly becoming a requirement for public sector building projects.

What products does FSC certification apply to?

Chain of Custody applies to most timber products provided by the Blumsom Timber Centre, including:

  • Sawn hardwoods and softwoods
  • Joinery
  • Sheet Materials (including MDF, Plywood and OSB / Chipboard)
  • Mouldings
  • Decking
  • Cladding
